La cifra oficial habla de setecientas islas y unos dos mil cuatrocientos cayos, dispersos en un archipi\u00e9lago que se extiende cerca de setecientas sesenta millas de norte a sur. Menos de cincuenta est\u00e1n habitadas. Para un capit\u00e1n principiante, es la primera traves\u00eda oce\u00e1nica seria de toda una vida en el agua \u2014 corto como para ser razonable, exigente como para imponer respeto. La Corriente del Golfo no es un peligro al que haya que temer, pero tampoco es un canal costero. Es una corriente, un sistema meteorol\u00f3gico de alta mar y una disciplina de navegaci\u00f3n, todo en uno. El capit\u00e1n que la lee bien llega a Bimini antes del mediod\u00eda. Es, en efecto, un r\u00edo dentro del oc\u00e9ano. Cruzada en las condiciones adecuadas, es una navegaci\u00f3n fluida, casi suave. Cruzada en condiciones equivocadas, es el tramo de mar m\u00e1s inc\u00f3modo del Atl\u00e1ntico occidental.<\/p>\n\n    <p class=\"art-body-text reveal\">La regla que los capitanes con experiencia repiten sin iron\u00eda es la m\u00e1s simple del oficio: <strong>nunca cruzar con viento del norte<\/strong>. La corriente fluye hacia el norte; un viento que sopla en su contra apila las olas en una forma corta, empinada y hostil que castiga por igual al casco y a la tripulaci\u00f3n. Hay que esperar la brisa del sur o sudeste, la ma\u00f1ana de verano en calma, la alta presi\u00f3n asentada sobre el estrecho. Nunca cruzar con un frente fr\u00edo aproxim\u00e1ndose, nunca con una tormenta en el horizonte, y nunca porque el calendario lo dicte.<\/p>\n\n    <p class=\"art-body-text reveal\">La corriente desplaza la embarcaci\u00f3n hacia el norte a unos dos o tres nudos, a veces m\u00e1s. Una traves\u00eda planificada en l\u00ednea recta llegar\u00e1 considerablemente al norte de su destino. Los chartplotters GPS modernos \u2014 bien configurados con waypoints precisos y acoplados a un autopiloto competente \u2014 corrigen esa deriva de manera continua, manteniendo el rumbo. La <strong>ruta del norte<\/strong> sube hasta North Rock y luego corre al este hacia Great Harbour Cay, en el extremo norte de las Berries.
