Pioneer Yachts Puts Its First Solar Electric PY60 in the Water
A two year old German yard launches an 18 meter catamaran built around solar electric propulsion from the keel up, and its founder is keeping hull one to run it himself.
Pioneer Yachts has launched the first PY60, an 18 meter solar electric catamaran built in Stralsund, Germany. Pioneer One now goes to sea trials before its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, September 8 to 13.
The founding claim is a design one. Rather than adapting a conventional powerboat platform to electric propulsion, which is what most of the segment has done, the PY60 was conceived from the outset around solar generation, storage and propulsion as one system. Whether that distinction holds up is what the sea trials are for.
The company was founded two years ago by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank, who assembled a team whose combined yacht building experience the yard puts at more than 275 years. Exterior design is by Cossutti & Ganz, the Italian studio behind Bavaria's sailing range; interiors by Micheletti + Partners, who have worked with Baltic Yachts and Nautor's Swan.

Frank plans to operate Pioneer One personally, using real cruising data to refine future production units. That is the detail that separates this from a launch announcement. Hull one is not going to a client; it is going to the shipyard's own operating log, and the yard has said so in advance.
For a two year old brand entering a segment crowded with electric prototypes, keeping the first boat is both a technical decision and a credibility play. It also means the Cannes premiere arrives with a season of real data behind it, rather than a spec sheet.

The energy architecture, and the voltage
Pioneer calls the system its Integrated Energy Architecture: propulsion, solar generation and storage operating as a single coordinated system, with the solar roof covering typical cruising loads and battery banks holding energy for silent navigation. Diesel generators remain in the package as backup. Top speed is 11 knots, cruising 7.5.
The engineering choice that industry readers will notice is the 48 volt backbone. Pioneer runs the major onboard systems at low voltage rather than adopting a high voltage architecture, and frames it explicitly as a decision about safety, reliability and ease of maintenance. It is the same voltage bet Numarine made on the 27XP. Two yards, two segments, the same conclusion in the same month.
The yacht is also positioned for owner operation without professional crew, which at 60 feet with simplified systems is plausible, and which defines the buyer this yard is going after.
