Azimut · Magellano 27M · Third Generation

Azimut Unveils the Magellano 27M, Designed by Jarkko Jämsén and Michele De Lucchi

The new flagship of the Magellano line pairs a Finnish exterior designer with Michele De Lucchi's studio for the first time, built around a glazed main deck loggia that changes how the space works rather than just how it looks. Underneath, the yacht keeps the Dual Mode hull the line has run since 2009, now paired with carbon fiber construction and an optional silent, generator free hotel mode at anchor.

Azimut has introduced the Magellano 27M, the third generation of its Magellano crossover line, in Viareggio. Exterior design comes from Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén, and the interior from AMDL Circle and Michele De Lucchi, the first time either has worked on a Magellano. The yacht is built around what Azimut calls a loggia, an open, heavily glazed main deck space intended to dissolve the line between the interior and the sea.

The design credit is the real news here. Azimut has run the Magellano line on its Dual Mode hull concept since 2009, but the exterior and interior work has historically stayed inside conventional yacht design studios. Putting a Finnish designer known for superyachts and industrial work on the exterior, and an architecture studio led by Michele De Lucchi on the interior, is a deliberate shift toward treating the yacht as a piece of architecture first. The clearest result is the loggia: the main deck saloon is built as one continuous, glazed volume rather than a sequence of separate rooms, framed in wood details that echo the slatted stern louvers carried on every Magellano since the first model.

That architectural language runs through the material choices. Light oak and walnut cover the main deck saloon and owner's suite, worked with the traditional Japanese Naguri hand chiseling technique on side tables, and a wall panel above the owner's bed is finished in HOSOO textile, woven on three hundred year old Kyoto looms. Lighting comes from Produzione Privata, the design studio De Lucchi founded in 1990, alongside pieces from Artemide. None of that changes how the yacht runs, but it is a specific, checkable departure from the finishes typically found on a yacht this size.

The hull and the silence underneath

Below the waterline, the Magellano 27M runs the same Dual Mode hull logic the line introduced in 2009: a double chine hull with a vertical bow, developed by Azimut|Benetti's R&D department with P.L. Ausonio Naval Architecture, paired with a central skeg for directional stability. The double chine is meant to work as a shock absorber, spreading wave impact across two steps rather than one, which lets the yacht run at speeds matched to actual sea conditions instead of forcing a single cruising number. Twin MAN V12 engines rated at 1,650 horsepower give a cruising range of 16 to 18 knots, a top speed above 24 knots, and roughly 1,000 nautical miles of range at 12 knots for longer passages.

Roughly 30 percent of the yacht's surfaces are built in carbon fiber, cutting weight and improving both fuel consumption and dynamic performance. Azimut's Silent Technology program, run by its in house Applied Technology Laboratory, adds elastic engine and generator mountings, dedicated silencers and particulate filters aimed at cutting noise and vibration on longer stays aboard. An optional Zero Emission Hotel Mode, running on lithium iron phosphate batteries, lets the yacht sit at anchor for part of a day or overnight without the generators running at all.

A line built on one 2009 crossing

The Magellano concept dates to the early 2000s under Paolo and Giovanna Vitelli, with the first hull launched in 2009. That year, during a winter crossing of more than 2,000 nautical miles across the Mediterranean, yachtsman and journalist Dag Pike wrote that the boat carried itself with a constant sense of confidence and control.

"sits solidly into the sea"

Seventeen years later, the 27M is still being sold on that same idea, a crossover hull built to keep going when conditions turn, now wrapped in an interior that argues the case with architecture rather than a spec sheet.
