VMG Reveals the VMG 53 Trimaran's Interior, a 53 Foot Yacht Where the Owner's Cabin Moves With the Itinerary

The first VMG 53, a 16 meter performance trimaran from the new, New York based yard VMG, is under construction for a January 2027 delivery. Interior designer Christophe Chedal Anglay built the layout around use rather than a fixed floor plan: the cabin the owner sleeps in changes depending on whether the boat is underway or at anchor.

VMG, a new shipyard focused on high performance luxury trimarans, has released the first interior details of the VMG 53, a 16 meter trimaran currently under construction at its New York based operation. The first unit is due for delivery in January 2027.

VMG stands for Velocity Made Good, a sailing term for the speed a boat actually makes toward its destination once tacking angles are factored in, and interior designer Christophe Chedal Anglay has taken that name literally. Rather than a fixed layout dressed up for entertaining, the VMG 53's interior is built around scenarios: who is on board, where the boat is, and what the owner needs from a given day.

A cabin that moves with the day

When the owner is underway, a cabin near the helm keeps them close to the controls. Once the boat reaches somewhere like the Caribbean and shifts into entertaining friends and family, that logic no longer applies, so the owner can move into a private cabin in one of the trimaran's side floats, freeing the main cabin to become a social space instead. Bifold doors and disappearing bulkheads let that main cabin open into a larger salon, a projector can use one of the bulkheads as a screen, and switchable glass adds privacy when the space reverts to sleeping. The same room functions as bedroom, salon or entertainment area depending on the scenario, an approach Anglay has linked to Japanese ideas about living spaces that transform from one day to the next.

The VIP cabin, forward and to starboard, is built to the same logic: a single berth that converts easily into a double, and storage and furniture that adjust in minutes to suit friends, couples or children, aiming for a comfort level close to the owner's suite without occupying the same footprint.

Materials chosen for a boat, not a photo

VMG's green brand color became the starting point for the palette, which Anglay pushed toward a wider reading of nature: green for an island rainforest, blue for a lagoon. The deck is painted a subtler, darker tone to improve visibility from outside, while the hull interiors run lighter to suit narrower, more streamlined spaces. On hull number one, a finish that shifts from deep green to golden bronze as light changes echoes the cork, eucalyptus and bronze hardware used throughout, and the same cork flooring runs from the aft cockpit through the deck to the bow, tying exterior and interior together rather than treating them as separate design problems.

"At its heart, it is designed for performance-orientated sailing, not as an entertainment platform."

A debut yacht with a name to live up to

Every VMG 53 keeps the same hull and deck architecture, but flooring, base colors, woods and textiles are adjusted with the designer for each owner, an approach Anglay describes as never repeating a project. For a first yacht from a shipyard named after a sailing performance metric, that is a specific kind of pressure: the interior has to prove the name applies below deck as much as it does on the water. The first hull's January 2027 delivery will be the actual test.
